Bring r22244 from trunk to 1.8 branch:

        Correct use of deprecated API routines in test routine.

Tested on:
        Linux/PPC 2.6 (ostrich) w/C++ & FORTRAN, w/threadsafe, in debug mode
        Linux/64-ia64 2.6 (ember) w/Intel compilers, w/C++ & FORTRAN, parallel,
                in production mode
